The beauty of vanlife is waking up anywhere, but when the temps drop, those mornings can get chilly. From mountain stays to coastal overnights, here’s how to stay cosy when the winter winds roll in.
1. Layer Up Your Bedding: Invest in thermal sleeping bags, wool blankets, and flannelette sheets. Layering traps heat better than one thick doona.
2. Cover the Windows: Insulated or reflective window covers make a huge difference. They block the cold, trap the warmth, and add privacy at night.
3. Use a Safe Heat Source: Consider a portable gas heater (with proper ventilation and safety precautions), or run your van engine briefly before bed for a blast of heat.
4. Keep Warm Clothing Handy: Have a “sleep kit” ,warm socks, thermal PJs, and a beanie. Losing heat from your head and feet is a fast way to freeze.
5. Hot Water Bottles or Heat Packs: Simple, old-school comfort. Boil water while you cook and fill a hot water bottle to tuck under the doona.
6. Stay Dry, Not Just Warm: Moisture = cold. Vent your van slightly overnight and keep clothes dry. A damp jacket in a tiny space = instant freezer vibes.
Winter vanlife is magical, misty mornings, quiet camps, cosy nights, as long as you’re prepared.
