There’s nothing quite like summer on the road. Sunsets at the beach, mountain swims, and freedom in every direction. But when the mercury rises, vanlife can quickly turn from dream to steam. Staying cool in your van during the summer isn’t just about comfort, it’s about safety, sleep, and keeping that easy breezy vibe alive. Here’s how to beat the heat while living your best vanlife.
1. Park Smart
Your parking spot can make or break your day. Always think shade first.
Morning: Park with your windshield facing west so you catch shade early in the day.
Afternoon: Find trees, cliffs, or buildings that block the harshest sun.
Bonus tip: If you’re near the coast, park where you can catch that ocean breeze, nature’s free air-con!
2. Maximise Airflow
Hot air loves to sit still, so get it moving!
Roof vent or fan: A 12V fan (like a MaxxAir or Fantastic Fan) is a game changer, it pulls hot air out and brings cool air in.
Window vents: Keep your windows cracked open slightly (with bug screens!) to allow cross-ventilation.
DIY trick: Hang a wet towel in front of the fan for a quick evaporative-cooling effect.
3. Cool Down from the Inside Out
Hydration is your best friend.
Keep a cooler or fridge stocked with cold water and fruit like watermelon and cucumber.
Make electrolyte ice cubes (just freeze coconut water!) to drop into drinks.
Avoid cooking inside your van during the hottest part of the day . Use a portable stove outside or prep cold meals like wraps, salads, or overnight oats.
4. Create Shade and Insulate
You’d be amazed at how much heat your van absorbs through windows and metal surfaces.
Reflective window covers or thermal insulation panels block heat and keep your van up to 10°C cooler.
Awning or tarp setup: Create an outdoor living space shaded from the sun.
Light colours rule: Lighter interiors and fabrics absorb less heat. Swap dark curtains or bedding for neutral tones.
5. Plan Your Day Around the Heat
Vanlife means freedom, so use it!
Mornings: Do your driving or activities early while it’s cooler.
Afternoons: Find a shady park, library, or café to chill in (and charge your devices).
Evenings: Cook, relax, and enjoy the cooler air once the sun dips.
6. Quick Cool-Down Tricks
When the heat gets unbearable:
Keep a spray bottle of water in the fridge and mist yourself.
Dip a bandana in cold water and tie it around your neck.
Portable shower bags or even a quick dip in a nearby river can refresh you instantly.
